Investment Casting

There is no more demanding foundry industry segment than investment casting.  Leading investment casting facilities that produce mission-critical components such as single crystal turbine blades for jet engines know that a less than perfect casting can not only cause that engine to self-destruct but also lead to an aircraft disaster that costs lives.  Investment casters producing medical implants realize their products will ultimately end up inside the human body, and therefore cannot accept anything but the creation of perfect end-castings.  As a supplier to some of the most recognizable and celebrated investment casting facilities in the world today, Comanche Technologies is committed to providing the most advanced and effective filter cup designs and materials on the market today.

Filtering within the Pouring Cone – The focal point for metal filtration in most investment casting applications is within the pouring cone, and the most common filters currently used by investment casters are ceramic foam, ceramic cellular (honeycomb), and Silica mesh filter cups.  While there may be slight differences in filtration effectiveness between these three different products, each has proven itself reliable and cost-effective at removing slag and dross from molten metal.

 WHY FILTER CUPS?

If your sole consideration is metal filtration, then there is no appreciable difference between these three products.  However, filter cups provide several unique benefits that the ceramic foam and cellular filters do not:

  • Best Results with Hot Topping – a filter cup can easily be removed after the pour so that there is no metal flow restriction during the exothermic action of the hot topping.
  • No custom pour cone required – foundries using ceramic foam or cellular filters typically have to use custom-made pour cones that have a small ledge added to the inner wall of the bottom for the filter to sit on.  Silica mesh filter cups can sit on the top of any standard pour cone.
  • No pre-heat required – unlike ceramic foam or cellular filters, Silica mesh filter cups can be placed in the pouring cone just prior to the pour.

 WHICH CUP IS BEST?

All Silica mesh filter cups are not the same – While there are a variety of Silica mesh filter cup manufacturers in the market today, aside from relative material quality, there is little if any performance difference from one cup to the next.  The sole exception to this “commodity product” mindset are the filter cups coming from Comanche Technologies.  Our most recent filter cup development, the TorrentFlow filter cup series, provides the following unique advantages:

  • 20% more throughput than a standard filter cup
  • 85% more active filtration area than a standard filter cup
